Period Casement Window Renovation services include draught sealing, repair, glazing upgrades, double glazing & bespoke replacement casement windows.
Draughty, binding or inoperable period casement windows are a familiar problem for owners of period properties.
Draught Seal & Restore
Draught Seal & Restore is our core casement window repair & recondition service and should be considered an essential upgrade for all existing period case windows.
A recondition and draught seal service will restore your casement windows to proper working order, stopping rattles and controlling those intrusive cold draughts. By controlling the draughts it also reduces the airborne noise & dust being carried into your home.
Draught-Seal benefits include:
- Primarily they seal the gaps where draughts enter, thereby improving the comfort & energy efficiency of your home & saving you money on energy bills.
- Low friction draught seals enable free movement of the casement, yet are tight enough to eliminate intrusive rattles.
- Air borne noise, dust and other pollutants that are suspended within draughts are also greatly reduced.
“ …one of the best and least intrusive ways of achieving improved performance from windows in old buildings. This will considerably reduce heating bills and energy use… reduce noise and dust ingress… Most importantly, draught proofing does not damage the visual aesthetics of an old building.”

Sealing draughts in your home will return significant savings in heating and cooling costs, as up to 25% of heat is lost via air leakage in a typical home.
Period casement windows are not regarded as being very energy efficient. The casement window frames have inherent gaps that allow the glazed case frames to swing open and the timber frames can also warp over time, creating larger gaps where air leakage and air infiltration originate.
Draught-stripping your existing period casement windows can reduce the draughts from them by almost 90%, therefore significantly reducing the air cooling or heating requirement needed for the room. Warm or cold draughts make air cooling and heating systems work harder and make occupants feel uncomfortable, often adjusting room thermostats to compensate.
Heat also passes through the glass itself but less than a quarter of the heat transfer through a typical period window is by conduction, the rest is by air infiltration - draughts. Heavy curtains or close-fitting roller blinds can help cut the amount of heat transfer through glass by more than 30%.
"Draught-proofing is one of the most cost effective and least intrusive ways of improving the comfort of occupants and reducing energy used for heating with little or no change to a building’s appearance." Historic England
How Does low-emissivity glass work?
Low-e glass has a special coating which is a poor radiator of heat and does not allow heat to be transferred through the glass. In winter, heating is reflected back indoors; in summer heat from the
sun is reflected away, keeping the room cooler.
Windows are a favourite entry point for burglars
Various catches effectively bring the sashes into a locked position, however the screws holding these in place are small and these catches should not be considered an effective security measure. We have a range of period window security options available. We also supply a wide range of casement window furniture, available in variety of finishes.
